UWS All-Region Defender Ashley Newland Re-Signed for 2022

San Antonio Athenians SC is proud to welcome Ashley Newland back as a member of the 2022 squad.

Newland was one of the most consistant defenders in all of UWS last season, making 12 appearances, 10 from the start, and contributing to 6 clean sheets for an Athenians team that won the UWS Southwest Region and advanced to the UWS National Semifinal for the first time in club history. She was selected to the UWS All-Region 2nd team for her exploits in purple and white.

Athenians Technical Director Leland Hammonds explained why Newland continues to be the perfect fit for the club: “We are thrilled to have Ashley returning to our squad! The long-term goal of Athenians is to attract and develop strong, committed players with professional aspirations and deliver a platform for those dedicated young ladies. Ashley checks every box and we can’t wait to work with her again.”

Prior to joining the Athenians, Newland graduated from Louisiana University Lafayette, where she finished her collegiate career with 47 games played, 35 starts, 1 goal, and 3 assists.

Ashley Newland is the 4th player announced as part of the Athenians’ 2022 squad, joining local products Olivia Wright, Mia Wildeman and Helene Farris, all of whom are returning after making key contributions in 2021.
