Mia Wildeman Set to return For 2022 SEason

After a breakout season in 2021, goalkeeper Mia Wildeman is returning to play for the Athenians once again this summer!

Wildeman broke into the Athenians team in week 4 of the UWS season and still ended up with 39 saves in the regular season alone. Solid with the ball at her feet, Wildeman made her name by making game-changing saves for the Athenians. Wildeman contributed to 4 shutouts and made the UWS Team of the Week in week 5. In addition, she twice took home the Save of the Week award. Her standout game came against professional opposition in Club America Femenil, making 14 saves and sending America fans online in to a frenzy hoping to sign her for their team. Her meteoric rise was crucial for the Athenians team in their run to the UWS National Semifinal, picking up the Regional Title along the way for the first time in team history. For all her excellent performances on the field, Wildeman was selected to the UWS South Region Team of the Season.

Wildeman is a member of John Walker’s Nebraska Cornhuskers squad that compete in the Big 10 Conference of NCAA Division I. She did not make any appearances in the 2021 fall season as the team went 7-9-2, ending the year with 3 straight wins but missing out on postseason action. With another summer of development and game action with the Athenians, Wildeman will return to Nebraska ready to earn the starting spot for next season.

Athenians Technical Director Leland Hammonds credits Wildeman’s attributes on and off the pitch: “Mia is an elite goalkeeper from our own backyard, but the thing I love most about her is that she has a wonderful spirit, is an amazing teammate and an absolute joy to be around.”

Wildeman joins Helene Farris on the Athenians’ roster for 2022, with many more talented players to be announced in the coming months leading up to the 2022 UWS season.
